sex of bird and feeding

by Lennie
(Campbelltown NSW)

How do you know the sex of rainbow lorikeets. Have found a very young bird in the park, some colourful feathers, a lot of grey downy feathers still. Am feeding hand raising powder, as suggested by pet shop. Is this all it needs. Feed 5 mls usually 3 times a day, sometimes 4, have had bird for 3 days now.

First of all, get this bird to an Avian Vet immediately as it could have internal/external parasites, infections or other physical problems. Have avian vet give it a thorough exam to make sure it is healthy.

Find an Avian Vet

The other issue is this size bird should be eating 10cc's or ml's 3 to 4 times a day. If it already has most of its feathers you need to study the weaning process as well as the basic feeding for these birds. You can find this information by doing a search on your type of bird baby. High quality organic diets are carried here, and please feed high quality food as all seed diets are slow starvation for birds of any species. Harrison's or Roudybush pellets are a good choice.

So, you're not feeding it enough, and it has not been examined by an avian vet, so these are things you need to do. You need to learn how to wean a baby bird and what a high quality diet is supposed to be for this bird.

Thanks for writing and keep us posted.
