I have a yellow crowned amazon, over the past few weeks he keeps trying to have sex with his perch, well thats what it looks like!
Is this behavior normal?

Perfectly Normal.....
by: Kim

.... at least it is "normal" in my experience with Amazons! I am not sure about other birds, although my Macaw does this as well in the Spring and summer.

I have a Blue Front amazon, that I got when it was 6 months old. It is now 14 years old and my baby. We never cared what sex it was, as we had no plans to breed it.

Anyhow, it never exhibited ANY kind of mating behaviors until about 3 years ago. All of a sudden it started to show the behaviors I have read about, and yes - especially the "perch mating" behavior!

Well, I thought I had a female because of this. I took it to the vet for its annual checkup, and decided to have it DNA tested... just out of curiosity. Lo and behold..... it was a MALE! And the funniest part is that he ONLY shows this behavior for my husband and no one else!! I guess he has chosen his "mate"

I have spoken to other Amazon owners who have described similar behavior as well. So yes, I firmly believe it is "normal" Amazon behavior.

sex with perch
by: Linda

Amazons reach puberty around 5-7 years old, so if your bird is younger, then no, this is not sex related. I've never seen a sexually mature bird make these kind of moves either.

My advice is to take your bird into be examined by an Avian Vet to rule out infections or some kind of irritation. If he gets a clean bill of health, then ask the Avian Vet about what age he believes him to be and go from there. Female parrots who are trying to attract a mate bend over and shake their tail feathers, while the males stand tall, become stiff, spread their tail feathers and strut back and forth on perch like a little toy soldier. They are also pinning their eyes during this courtship ritual.

Take bird to Avian Vet for exam and rule out physical causes.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
