Sharon Moon - Nanday Conure

Help! A month ago I was given a nanday conure by a person who thought it may have been a bird that I had lost ( not much difference between an alexandrine and a conure in some folks eyes I guess) despite an extensive search for its owner, it now seems that 'Jasper' has become a member of my flock.

I know absolutely nothing about conures although I have 12 different parrots of my own. Jasper does not have a blue chest, don't know when they get it. but I think he is a young bird, definitely hand reared. and I have a problem.

I have tried offering him all sorts of different food that my own birds get, but he will not even try them. All he is eating is sunflower seed. When I remove them from his diet he will eat nothing, don't know how I can get him to eat normal parrot food like fruit, veggies or even pellets. As soon as his beak touches them he acts like he is terrified of them. Any suggestions to get him on a healthier diet would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Sharon

Switching bird to pellets
by: Tracie

Congratulations on your new flock member! Please read our Switching Birds to Pellets article to learn about helping your bird accept pellets.

Remember, it may take some time for your bird to recognize the pellets as food. It took my Budgie a year of putting seed in his dish every single day for him to decide to eat seeds. He was weaned to pellets and didn't know what a seed was.

Now my Budgie loves seeds and I only put seeds in the dish in the evening so that they eat their pellets all day before getting the seeds.
