should i get a male or female budgie?

by Julia
(USA)

I've had my male and female budgie for about 3 1/2 years now. Just recently the female budgie died. Both budgies were very close so I'm worried about the male who has been less social since she passed. I wanted to get a new budgie because my male needs company while I am gone and I don't want him to get lonely. I've done some research about getting either a male or female budgie and everything says something different.

I was wondering if I got young male if the two would most likely get along or if they would fight. Also, would it be hard for my male to try to get along with another male because he's been with a female all his life? I'm slightly leaning towards getting another male but do not really have a preference. Please let me know what the BEST option would be.

Male or female budgie?

The problem is, you don't know if any bird will get along with your bird. Either bird may attack the other. I suggest you purchase a male, because you don't want them breeding. Then, put the new bird in a different cage until you have allowed them to play together outside the cage you want to house them to make sure they will get along.

Even after they have gotten along outside the cage, they may still fight in the cage. You will have to be there to grab the new bird out if either bird is cage territorial.
