Bird sleeping on one leg
by: Tracie

If the bird is sleeping on one leg, then it is likely exhausted from the stress and not sick. Birds that are healthy will often fluff up, tuck their head on their back and stand on one leg to sleep.

Now, you need to take your bird to an avian vet quickly if the bird stays this way all day, hangs out at the bottom of the cage, or isn't eating and drinking.

I suggest you make a well bird appointment now anyway. Your bird should be examined for possible health problems and be vaccinated. Then if some day in the future you need to take the bird in due to illness, you already have a vet and they have a record of what your bird is like when it is well.

Congratulations on your new bird!

Oh, by the way, please convert your bird to a healthy pellet diet like Harrison's if the bird is not already eating pellets. This will keep your bird healthy and your bird will live longer. If you need help converting your bird to pellets, then please read the Switching Birds to Pellets article.
