Sick Canary

We have what we thought was a healthy young canary up until a week ago. Brought him to the pet store for a nail clipping and they diagosed him with mites on feet -- said dangerous if don't treat - as can spread to blood.

We used Scalex for about 5 days (saturated his feet 2 x per day), but had to catch him in order to do this. He was scared to death--had trouble catching him--he did not like being touched at all--not sure if he is now spooked. Here is what has been happening since:

He now sits on the top perch in the corner and does not move much. He eats very little, drinks water and has only a small amount of his lettuce which he used to devour. He will not take a bath (bath at bottom of cage). In fact he will not fly to the bottom of the cage at all--he only flies across and very infrequently. He looks terrible (seems to be some dark areas on him). Noticed more white droppings than usual. He seems to also be tired and be breathing hard. He still seems to respond to voices though. Any ideas?

Can we give him an antibiotic/vitamin from over-the-counter. We cannot take him anywhere to be looked at as he would not make it through the ride as we can't even touch him for now.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much.

Cyndy, NJ

Pet store medicine making bird sick
by: Tracie

Dr B has answered this numerous times before, so I will repeat his answers here.

Do NOT use over the counter mite medications, they are dangerous and can kill your bird. You need to Find an Avian Vet to examine and treat the mites if that is what is going on here, but immediately discontinue using the over-the-counter product.

There could be other causes such as bacteria, viruses, toxins, etc. will require very different treatments.

The stress of catching your bird and transporting it to an avian vet is less risky than not treating whatever is wrong with your bird. If your bird is in a cage that will fit in your vehicle, you can take the bird in the cage it is in.
