Sick conure?

by Kelly
(New Jersey)

I have a sun conure who is a little bit over six weeks old and got him from a breeder. The breeder supposedly hand fed it, however, my bird, Juan Pierre, does not have an eating response so it's a hassle to hand feed him everyday because he doesn't necessarily want to take the food.

His poop is sometimes all green surrounded by liquid with some white in it, and sometimes it's just a little green feces. We did put little seeds in his cage and he's finally picking at them. I've had him since Friday, August 19th.

I've had conures in the past and they were extremely active. Juan Pierre however likes to sleep, and sometimes will fall asleep after standing somewhere for a while. The only thing he likes to do that is active is climb on to the top of someone's head. He can already perch and is friendly with everyone. He is for the most part fully feathered. I'm just not sure if this behavior is typical that he is often falling asleep. Maybe it's because he's just a baby? Please let me know.

Baby conure hand feeding
by: The Avian Vet

These are signs of a sick bird. You need to immediately take him to see an avian veterinarian who is familiar with the hand feeding process. There are so many problems that can occur when breeders sell unweaned babies. (Please read the To Wean or Not To Wean article).

How often are you feeding this baby?
What formula are you feeding?
What temperature are you keeping him?
How much are you feeding?
What is his weight and what has it been for the last 3-5 days?
What is the temperature of the formula when you feed it?
What method are you using to feed? A syringe? A spoon?...

I am happy to offer phone consultation services to help you through the hand feeding process, but your bird will need to be seen by an avian veterinarian to determine the cause of this illness.
