skin tag or polyp in the crease of 12 year old macaws leg

by Nancy
(Damascus, MD)

While my macaw was bathing I notice a skin tag or polyp in the crease of her leg, it is not discolored, nor does it seem to bother her. It has not been noticeable when she is dry, her feathers do cover it but it is polyp shaped and about the size of the eraser on top of a pencil. What could this be?

This needs to be looked at by an Avian Vet in your area. It could be a tumor, and in order to find out what it is, the Avian Vet will need to draw some material from it and look at it under the microscope. Sometimes birds develop fatty tumors from eating all seed diets high in fat as well as other junk food. Your bird needs to be eating a high quality pelleted diet and no people food. Below is a link to article written by an Avian Vet on how to go about changing bird over to organic pellets. This takes time, so follow directions, and before any changes in diet, make sure your bird has been examined by the Avian Vet as this could be very serious. You can find the organic pellets here and Harrison's is the best one.

Thank You for writing and let us know what the avian vet has to say about your bird.
