My new cockatiel has started sleeping on the bottom of cage, we have had him 1 week and he was owned for 5 years but the previouse owners had less time to spend with him so I got him is this behavior normal or should I take him to the vet

conure parrot sleeping on bottom of cage
by: Rich

I got my 12 week old conure parrot a couple of days ago and he will not touch any of the perches and will just climb and cling to the bars.
ive been very worried about this and yesterday morning found him asleep at the bottom of the cage, at first he gave me such a fright as i thought he was dead.

im taking him to the vets for a checkup in wednesday when im free, just to put my mind to rest.

sleeping on bottom of cage
by: Heather

Hi me again, no it sleeps on perch at night is was just for a while during the day it is eating and drinking and chirping heaps just had a sleep yesterday for a while and I wasn't sure if this was normal if they have a nap. I had a rainbow before and he did everything weird, slept on his back and did rude things to a stuffed toy but I am new to cockatiels. He was foriging around and then had a snooze so I was hoping he thought well I'm down here now I'll have a rest. thanks for your help. Please let me know if I have my wires crossed. Cheers Heather

I think it's not unusual

I asked a similar question about my conure sleeping all night hanging on to the sides of the cage and received no response at all but I believe it's normal because my new bird has not slept on a perch since I got him a couple of months ago and I see nothing negative in his health or behavior from sleeping while hanging on to the cage bars. It's possible that sleeping on the bottom of the cage is kind of the same thing.

More information please

Is the bird just sleeping at night on the bottom of the cage, or is the bird sleeping during the day on the bottom of the cage?

If the bird is sitting fluffed up on the bottom of the cage most of the time, then get your bird to an avian vet ASAP - your bird is very sick.
