Small abrasion on my sun conures stomach

by Lisa
(Houston, Texas )

I noticed this evening a small spot on my sun's stomach where her feathers were darkened with blood. After examining her, I found a small abrasion, like a skinned knee... I'm not sure what happened to have caused this. It stopped bleeding apparently very quickly as I cannot find any drops of blood in her cage. It's clotting.. What can I do, if anything to help it to heal?

Safe topical ointment for birds
by: The Avian Vet

I was out of town, and did not answer this before you took your bird to the vet. The only topical medication you should use without the supervision of a veterinarian is Soother Plus.

Conure with small abrasion
by: Tracie

I am so glad you took your bird to the avian vet instead of waiting for Dr B to answer here. People get so frustrated that we constantly suggest they take their birds to the vet, but as you just showed it is the only way to know what is wrong.

Who would have guessed that your bird had a broken bone? I sure would not have figured that out.

Thanks for the update! It may save another bird's life. :-)

Update!
by: Lisa

Well, took Sunnie to vet emergency as I also noticed a small lump. It appears that her keel (sp?) broke through her skin after a MINOR fall inside her cage, the lump was swelling from the injury. She has to wear a cone for a week and is taking antibiotics to fend off any infection, as well as a pain reliever. I urge bird owners who clip their pets wings to watch for injuries... Even a short fall can have a big consequence!
