Solomon is shaking his head with interval periods of time

by Elma Wilson
(South Africa)

My Solomon Eclectus has been discharged yesterday, he had salmonella infection, and was with the vet for the whole week. Since he is back from yesterday, he shakes his head with interval periods of 2-4 seconds apart, as if something is bothering him around his head and scratches a lot.

It appears if his skin is a bit dry and flaky, I put some Lavender spray on his feathers. Could you tell what is the cause of shaking his head, can it be all the medication he received, he is still on antibiotics (Baytril), Saturday will be the last day for the antibiotics, then I must start the crop treatment for 3 days and after that the vita tea for 3 days.
Please help.
Kind regards
Elma Wilson

Solomon is shaking his head with interval periods of time
by: Elma Wilson

Hi, my Solomon Eclectus, Jamie, was admitted in hospital on Saturday again, after he was discharged on Thursday.
Reason for head shaking: he had extreme sinus infection. According to his doctor, it is their way to get rid of the sinus. As doctor explained to me, parrots do have a split palate, and to shake their heads all the time, is the only way to get rid of the sinus, the same as human beings blow their nose to try and get rid of the sinus.
Together with the shaking of his head, he flicked his wings as well. I still do not know what the reason is therefor, but will know tomorrow, as Jamie will be discharged tomorrow.
He got the sinus infection because of his immune system that was very low of the fact that he had salmonella infection.
Kind regards

Call your avian vet
by: Tracie

I think it is best to call your avian vet and ask them, since they would know best about your bird's condition and how the medications prescribed might affect your bird.
