sore foot

by Robin

A week ago I noticed that my Indian ringneck was favoring one leg. It looked like the skin was peeling on one toe. The next day it was quite red and seemed to be sorer. The next day it looked a little better. It has improved and now just looks like a bruise, but really seems to be quite sore.

He can stand on it if he needs to, but holds it up and kind of twitches it every chance he gets. I took him to the vet 2 days ago and he sais to soak it in cold water for4-5 minutes, 3 times a day. Last night I woke up and the poor guy was crying loudly. I took him out and soaked it and it seemed to help.

All I can think is that he may have been bitten by my African Gray during playtime when they are both out of their cages, but I can't be sure. How lomg should a foot injury take to feel better. It has been a week now and while it looks better, it doesn't seem to feel better.

Bird with sore foot
by: The Vet

Foot injuries are painful. The pain and discomfort can last up to 3-4 weeks, depending on the severity of the injury.

Did your veterinarian take x-rays to see if it is broken? I would recommend doing so. I also would not recommend soaking in cold water. What I would recommend is some pain medication prescribed by your veterinarian. This will make your bird feel better and decrease healing time.

Finally, you should not allow your bird to play out side of the cages at the same time unsupervised. Next time, it could be a missing beak, not just a toe laceration. That will never heal.
