Squatting and balance

by Sandy

My Blue Front Amazon is squatting low while sitting on his perch and hold on to the side of his cage with his beak. He has not been ill in the 16 years we have had him but this is very unusual behavior. Do you know what might cause this behavior?

Amazon "squatting"
by: Anonymous

I know this is probably a little late, but I think this is normal. I've got an amazon (he's 31, had a mate that died 3 years ago) and every once in a while, he'll walk over, grab the side of the cage, squat down and flap his wings a little. He'll do it on top of the cage and on the couch also. I've looked everywhere online and I can't find anything about this! It's driving me nuts! My guess is it's some form of trauma (could be completely wrong) for being locked in a cage for so long (in my case, not sure about yours).

Squatting, holding cage for balance
by: Don Houston Texas

YOUR PET IS SICK, GET HIM TO A VET NOW! Some birds squat as a matter of keeping their feet warm or going to sleep. SQUATTING AND HOLDING ON FOR BALANCE IS NOT NORMAL AND HE IS SICK!! These birds have built in gyros, balance systems. When there is something wrong enough for them to need to hold on to something for balance, something is wrong. NEVER HESITATE TO TAKE YOUR BIRD TO THE VET IF YOU NOTICE SOMETHING OUT OF NORMAL! ONCE THEY GET SICK, THEY RARELY GET WELL!!

squatting parrot

Just like us, regardless if unwell or taken to the vet in the past, they can still get sick.

Your bird needs to be examined by an avian vet to see why his behaviour has changed and what may be causing it.

He may well be unwell.

Bird squatting and balance issues
by: Tracie

Since this is new behavior, you need to have the bird examined by an avian vet. Please use this Find an Avian Vet link to find an avian vet for your bird so it can be examined to determine what is wrong and what the potential treatment might be.
