Stepping up

by Melly
(Plymouth)

I've tried everything to get my parrot to step up, but he just point blank refuses, what can I do? He even refuses to when I put pressure on his abdomen. Help! I've had him for 3 months now.

Teaching your bird to step up
by: Tracie

Please visit our Parrot Training page for more information on developing a relationship with your bird and then training the bird to do things you would like it to do.

We have pet stores here that DO take their birds to avian vets and only sell healthy birds, but many stores purchase from "dirty" breeders that are just in it for the money and have unhealthy birds breeding and babies that are in poor health. I suggest you Find an Avian Vet for your bird before attempting to train the bird.

Stepping up
by: Linda

It takes time to train parrots, and if you have not taken him to an Avian Vet before training, he may be sick and does not feel like doing anything much.

ALL and I repeat ALL birds coming from pet store chains are already sick with or incubating an infection usually a bacterial one and need to be examined during the first few days by a licensed and trained Avian Vet as dog and cat vets are NOT licensed to even look at a bird much less try to diagnose and treat it.

Most birds coming from breeders are also sick unless breeder has given you a health certificate showing a very recent exam from an Avian Vet.

So, go back to the top on this one and have your bird properly examined for infections BEFORE any training or dietary changes of any kind. This is the most important first step with your new bird. Once your bird is either cleared for infections or is diagnosed, and you have given correct medicine prescribed by Avian Vet, then you will be ready to start over with the training. There are some training materials on this site, and the internet is full of information.

Start your bird off right, and everything else falls into place with a lot of patience, understanding and work on your part.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
