Sticking tongue out and rubbing it

by Jamie
(Long Island, NY)

My Quaker Parrot who is almost 2 (we have had her since 11 weeks) started sticking her tongue out to the side this morning over and over. She also is sometimes sticking her tongue out and rubbing it. She is eating, drinking, pooping and other than the tongue thing acting normally. She has never done this before and I'd like to know if this is a behavior or if something can be going on with her.

I called the vet and since it's Saturday they are closed. I do plan on calling again when they open and see what she thinks but in the meantime I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thank you for your time.

Bird sticking tongue out
by: The Avian Vet

This may be a behavior and not mean anything. But I could be caused by beak problems such as being over grown; or by a foreign body stuck inside the mouth. She could have a crop infection.

I have seen this behavior in birds who are on the drug haloperidol for feather plucking. This is a neurological side effect of the drug. This drug should not be used in birds. I recommend that you have your bird examined by an avian veterinarian.
