Strange African Grey behavior

by Sandra
(South Africa)

I have 2 African grey Congos by the names of Columbus & Angel. For the past 2-weeks Columbus has been very very attentive towards me (he is usually touchy feely but has taken this to a new level). He does the normal reguritating but added to this he wants me to hold his beak while he holds my hand with his claw, pulls his wings completely forward and then starts gnashing his beak until clear slaive is produced. While he is doing this he seems completely oblivious to anything round him. Is this normal? Look forward to hearing from you, many thanks Sandra (South Africa)

This sounds like it is possible seizure activity. You need to take your birds to your nearest Avian Vet for a full examination. In case this is an infection, take the other one too as both will have whatever is wrong.

The affection part you described is just a loving bird's behavior. The drool and not being aware of surroundings is called a petit mal seizure and must be looked into with an Avian Vet immediately.

Thanks for writing as your inquiry may just save both your bird's lives.

Your bird is probably masturbating. No harm will come of this.

If the bird is showing signs of illness, take it to an avian vet.
