strange choking noise, standing on one feet

Hello, My in-laws have an Amazon parrot. Right now, they are abroad for 6 weeks and have left the parrot in my care. I've had a close connection with the parrot. I can play and and feed it without getting bitten.

Recently, she had some strange behaviour.
Today she was shivering. Yesterday she did not sleep till 23.00 hrs.

For 2 weeks now, I have noticed that she is standing on one feet, making choking sounds, and stretching her other feet as far as possible as if she is trying to grab something in the air with her feet. It seems she is trying to grab some invisible stick in the air. her tail is also bend towards her feet while she is doing this. She does this 2-3 times a day for a minute or two. After that she is behaving normally.

Recently we also had some dogs on our premises. they were probably barking at her. she was safe from the dogs, but i think the dogs stressed her. when we returned home, she was shivering and shaky.

I just want to give you the most information I can think of. Her strange behavior is worrying me.

Bird choking and grasping air with one foot
by: Tracie

Standing on one foot while sleeping is normal, choking and stretching one foot out is not normal. The bird could be having a seizure or something.

You need to get the bird to an avian vet right away. Find out what avian vet they take the bird to. If they don't take the bird to an avian vet, then please use this Find an Avian Vet link to find an avian vet for your bird so it can be examined to determine what is wrong and what the potential treatment might be. Only an in person visit will help this bird.
