strange sound

by Jancy hokenson
(Minnesota)

I have a 6 yr old timneh African gray. He started making some strange noise a few weeks ago. I have not worried about it because he hasn't been acting differently, poop is normal, very active, etc.

The sound is more of a weird throaty sound...the only thing I can compare it to is (bear with me) - have you ever had your throat make like that swallowing/squish/ squeak kind of sound? That's what it sounds like. Only lasts a second and he really doesn't even move when he does it.
He does this noise randomly throughout the day.

Any ideas? Is he just imitating something?

Thank you!!

Jancy

Jancy, I cannot imagine the sound you are trying to describe, and Greys are masters at making sounds exactly as they are heard. Could it be he's heard someone making the sound you describe?

I'd keep an eye on him, and if anything changes in his behavior, eating or sound of his breathing, then he'll need to be seen by an Avian Vet immediately. We recommend yearly checkups to make sure birds stay healthy. Once they become ill, they go down hill quickly and it takes a long time to bring them back up to health if you're fortunate enough to be able to do that.

Your bird also needs to be eating high quality organic pellets as his main diet. If he is eating all seeds even with supplements like vitamins, he is starving to death which will show up as time goes on in the form of chronic illness, lack of energy, fat cell tumors on his body, and internal damage that may or may not be fixable. Tracie carries several of the organics here, and here is a link on how to go about the change from seed to pellet:
