Stressed sun conure

by Rebecca
(Maryborough Qld, Australia)

Sun Conure

Sun Conure

I have a 1 year old female sun conure. Sadly her mate died in April this year. Ever since then she has been loosing her tail feathers and has made a mess of her flight feathers too. I was also thinking this might be due to her staying awake until 7-8pm at night. Not sure how to get her feathers to grow properly again?

Stressed conure maybe be sick
by: The Avian Vet

Separation anxiety is likely playing a role in this case, but, there are so many reasons why your bird would be doing this. Nutritional deficiencies, cage too small, infections either viral, bacterial, or fungal, egg binding... You need to have this bird seen by an avian veterinarian.

Stressed sun conure
by: Linda

The first thing indicated here is a trip to your Avian Vet to make sure she is not sick. Whatever killed her mate may also be present in her body. ALL infections are highly contageous, so take her to avian vet quickly to make sure she's not suffering from an infection or other physical problem.

Losing a mate is a dangerous time for the bird left behind. It would be a good idea to get another conure, put it in a cage next to her for company. Sometimes mated birds who lose their mates will grieve themselves to death or do other things to hurt themselves like pull out all feathers and then start mutilating themselves.

Make sure she is clear of infection before bringing another bird home, and make sure new bird is seen by an avian vet BEFORE being brought into your home or whatever it has will be quickly given to your hen.

Good luck and let us know what avian vet has to say and how everything goes.

Linda
