Sudden death of my parkeet

by Alli

I have (had) two parakeets, Lovey and Jupiter. One day a few months ago, I found Jupiter on the floor of the cage, dead. He had shown no signs of sickness that I could see, and was acting very normal beforehand. Lovey is still alive. Any ideas as to what caused his death?

also, we had just gotten jupiter from the pet store about 5 months before the incident; he was not very old.

A lot of birds come from pet stores, breeders or individuals already sick with something or have a physical problem that has gone untreated. In this case, you will never know what happened to your bird without a necropsy being done on the body.

What I do strongly suggest is you have your remaining bird checked out by an Avian Vet right away because infections are highly contgeous. There may be something else wrong with your bird, and it's always better safe than sorry.

Hopefully, you are feeding organic pelleted diet like Harrisons because all seed diets cause fatty liver disease. Birds usually recover from this when put on a healthy diet. All seed diets are starvation for birds, and sometimes they die from organ failure due to poor diet. Below is link to article written by avian vet about how to go about the change from seeds to pellets because it takes time. Make no changes until your bird has been examined and either cleared for physical issues or diagnosed and treated.
