sudden one eye shut on my burkit

by Maria
(Daytona Beach)

My bird is possibly 15 years old . Less than 14 days I noticed one eye close and as if he has a catarat in the left eye. He appears less active but still eats , drinks and does fly in his cage in the AM or PM .

His left eye remains close for the most part. if I get close to the cage he may open the eye. I have cover the cage on the sides , brought the perch down and put some sulfadimethoxine in the water. Any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
M

Yes, make an appointment with an Avian vet and take him in. Also NEVER, NEVER GIVE BIRDS ANY MEDICATIONS THAT AN AVIAN VET HAS NOT PRESCRIBED. Sulpha drugs are poison for birds, and I hope your bird is not damaged because of it. Take bird to a trained, qualified Avian Vet to have infection diagnosed and a prescription given for it.

Giving birds medicines we may happen to have at home or those we can buy over the counter is one of the most dangerous things we can do to our birds. We are not vets, and I'm speaking for ALL of us bird owners, and we must take our birds to a bird doctor when they are sick. Your bird has been sick for 2 weeks, and it will only get worse. The meds may also be having adverse effects on him, so stop giving them to him and take him in to see an Avian Vet in your area.

Thanks for writing,
Linda

Eye shut on bird

Dr B can not help with this problem. You need to get your bird to an avian vet soon for an exam. He may have an infection or something else, only an exam will determine the cause and the proper treatment that should be administered.

Let us know how it goes and what you find out.
