sun conure breaking off tail feathers

by Marisa

i have a sun conure a little over one year old, ever since he has gone through his first molting stage and gaining all new tail feathers, he has been breaking them off, not plucking them out, just snapping them off wherever he can.

i play with him a number of hours during the day and leave him out of the cage to play whenever i cannot. but every time new feathers come in, he breaks them off before they even get to grow out all the way. is it possible for a bird not to like his own tail?

Sun Conure Tail Feathers
by: Anonymous

I have a Sun Conure who flew on the floor. When he was to be picked up the bird moved quickly and the person picking him up accidentally leaned on his tail feathers causing ALL of his feathers to be pulled out. Will he be OK?

Editor's note: They will grow back, keep your bird off the floor! Toxic things and potential bird disease you bring in on your shoes can infect your bird. In the future if you want people to see and answer, you need to post a question, not an answer here to another question, on our Parrot Questions page.

it has been so long i have been so busy and haven't had time to answer. i went out to walmart and bought some molting and vitamin seeds for him, and also bought multi-drop vitamins. everyday i give him a little bit of his seeds and pour a couple drops of the multi-drop vitamins in them. within only two weeks, his tail was fully grown out again and he does not mess with it! his wings feather grew out even longer and more beautiful than ever. im so grateful that i found these vitamins for him. he is happier then ever.

Editor's note: YIKES! Those vitamins could eventually kill your bird. I killed by bird with vitamins from the pet store, it caused him to become toxic and he died of organ failure. :-(

Young bird breaking off tail feathers
by: The Avian Vet

This is a common problem in young, playful birds. However, poor nutrition can cause feathers to break easily. I recommend that you feed 80% pellets, 20% healthy treats. Harrison's or Roudybush pellets are the best. It could also be related to cage size. The minimum size cage for a sun conure is 20 x 24, and larger is even better. Finally, if your bird has not been seen by an avian veterinarian, them he should go in for an exam and vaccines and this should be done annually.
