Sun Conure eggs

How big are the eggs? I have a sun conure that had a large egg ~3" in circumference. I am not sure if she is distressed or if it is normal. She may have another that she is trying to lay. She has not had eggs before that I know of. I have had her for two years, but I believe she may be at least over 7 years old. She is eating and drinking well but having loose stool.

Sun Conure laying eggs
by: The Vet

Depending on how you measured the egg, this sounds like a normal size for a sun conure. Parrots will lay 2-4 eggs, one every other day. Sometimes they will lay only one. If she is sitting on it and paying attention to the egg, then leave it in the cage for her.

Sometimes they will not start sitting until the second or third egg, so leave it for a few days. IF there is not a second egg or she has not begun sitting on it within 4 days, then remove the egg.

If she is tying to lay another egg and is having difficulty, then this is an emergency and your bird needs to be seen by an avian veterinarian immediately.

The loose droppings are normal for an egg-laying bird. However, after the egg laying (and or sitting) are finished, then you should have her examined by an avian veterinarian to be sure there is no lasting infection causing the loose droppings.

The most important thing you can do for your bird to prevent health problems associated with egg laying is to put her on a pellet diet, such as Harrison's. This will ensure that she is not calcium deficient. A non-pellet diet cannot provide balanced nutrition to prevent health problems.
