sun conure is growing spiky feathers

my 10-year-old sun conure is otherwise healthy, but just recently started growing a lot of spiky feathers, mostly around the back of his head and neck. is this normal?

Sun conure molting

This sounds like your bird is molting. When the feathers come in they are hard and "spiky" as you describe. These feathers still have a blood supply and are very tender and sometimes itchy.

Please provide water for your bird to bathe in, this often helps the bird with preening the new feathers coming in, as it softens the hard sheaths covering the feathers.
