Sun Conure

by Stephanie

I adopted a sun conure about 3 weeks ago. I have dogs and while I wasnt home, the sun conure managed to get its cage open. My dog got him in his mouth and I walked in the door as this was happening. The sun conure dropped all of its tail feathers, but I got him checked out and he has no punctures or internal issues. He is acting very different. He will go on my finger and shoulder and is still very loving, but he wont talk as much and he goes in one corner of the cage now, where before he would climb all over the cage. How can I help him get back to normal. Also, I have gotten a cage that he cannot get out of now.

Sun Conure gotten by dog

I am sorry this happened to your bird!

It is normal for them to "drop" feathers when they feel attacked. My concern is whether or not the dog injured him even if there was not any blood.

Birds have hollow bones that are easily broken. If your bird is not eating properly, or has other signs of illness get him to an avian vet ASAP.

I would put some white paper towels on the bottom of the cage so that you can observe his droppings. Make sure he has droppings and that they look normal.
