Supposedly Sick Bird?

My pet parakeet was always a little chubby, but recently she has lost that little fat line on her stomach. I have been trying to switch her diet to pellets for a while, feeding her a mixture of Kaytee's pellets and seed, but she only picks out the seeds.

She's a lazy little bird that only flies to her foodbowl to eat. Today, she was sitting very still with almost no movement at all. She was looking normal, but when I checked on her again, she was sitting hunched over her favorite toy with her tail slightly bobbing.

I moved her to a warmer location, but she seems to be overheating. Her eyes, nose, and vent are clear, but her poop seems smaller these days. I am unsure of whether she is sick or not. She is a 4 year old obese female parakeet that is usually inactive.

My parents forbid me to bring her to the vet unless she is on the brink of death, so if she is sick, please tell me home remedies to cure my bird. Thanks in advance! :]

Your bird IS on the brink of death, so now you need to find an Avian Vet so she can get looked at, weighed and go from there. She may have contracted an infection, and the tail bobbing ususlly indicates an upper respiratory infection which will kill her if left undiagnosed and untreated.

Since neither you nor we know what is wrong here, we cannot offer you any recommended meds. In fact, never give over the counter meds or home remedies as these kill more birds than you want to know about. She needs the services of a licensed and trained Avian Vet in order to be correctly diagnosed and treated. Only an Avian Vet will be able to help her.

Here is a link on how to go about changing from seeds to pellets that was written by an Avian Vet to help you with the changeover. Your bird cannot lose weight quickly or she will die from liver or kidney failure. Talk with the Avian Vet about all this when she goes in for her exam. Here is link to article:

Switching Birds To Pellets article

Tell your parents that your bird is in the process of dying because she will without medical help, so it is the God's own truth.

Let us know what Avian Vet has to say and thanks for writing,
Linda

Supposedly Sick Parakeet

Is she bored? does she have room to fly and toys? also fruits & veggies are important. Could she be egg-bound (trying to lay an egg but it is stuck) you will see a buldge near her vent. I don't have any other suggestions, sorry. Hopefully someone can give you an answer, it is too bad your parents feel that way about taking your bird to the vet, you obviously care about her and are concerned.
