Swelling of the Cere

by Heather
(Oregon)

Our bird flew into the bathroom mirror and hit it pretty hard & fell into the sink. At first he was a little shaken up but now he's fine, a tad bit ornery because of the incident but fine; he's signing and everything just like normal. But his right side of his cere is swollen & redish, like he has a bloody nose. What can i do to help the swelling?

Swelling of the Cere

For now, leave him alone. If, however, you see ANY blood or pus or further swelling, he has become infected and will have to be taken to an Avian Vet in your driving area. Only an Avian Vet as dog and cat vets do not know how to diagnose or treat birds or other exotic animals and sometimes kill them with wrong meds and wrong dosages.

Anytime you see blood or pus from any area, this is an emergency and has to be taken care of immediately.

So, just watch him and make sure the swelling does not get any worse or exude blood or pus as any of those is cause for alarm.

When you do take your bird into Avian Vet, have them clip the 6 long Primary Flight Feathers which are at the ends/bottoms of each wing. A bird should not be allowed free-flight as this kind of accident can be fatal, and they can sometimes be poisoned from eating the wrong thing. Homes are dangerous, and birds, like little children, have to be protected from themselves.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
