Swelling on B&G Macaw jaw?

by Lindsey
(Texas)

I have a 5 year old Blue and Gold Macaw, and I just noticed an area on the back of his mandible below his ears that is about the size of a penny and swollen/some type of bump. It is on his right side, and on his left side there is a small bump in the same area. It almost looks like it has fluid in it.

I pet him gently to ease my way in to touch the bumps, and they did not feel hard, and he did not react badly to me touching them. I stretched his skin a little, and it was harder to see the bumps which made me wonder if there was fluid?? It is on his white skin on his face, so it's easy to see. He has had bruises on his face in the past from playing too roughly with his toys, but nothing ever got swollen, and I'm not sure why he would have bumps on both sides.

He does not seem to be acting differently, but I'm still worried, and in the past he has had sinus allergies, causing the skin above his nostrils to get a little puffy and pink, but this is his jaw. Please let me know what you think. I will post pics tomorrow. I plan on taking him to the vet, but it is Sunday, and I'm worrying about him. Thanks.

Since it is Monday, and Dr B would not even be able to read this question until tonight or tomorrow, we will wait to hear back from you how your vet visit went.

Dr B would not have been able to diagnose over the Internet anyway. He would advise you to take the bird to an avian vet for a physical exam, that is the only way to determine what is going on.

Please take your bird to an avian vet, not a dog/cat vet. I know of birds that died just going for a routine check up at at a regular vet, due to their lack of knowledge and experience with exotic birds.
