Taking Bird to Avian Vet
by: Linda

No, you cannot give your bird any antibiotics without an Avian Vet's prescription and approval. Your bird's leg could even be broken which means it will need to be set and casted for a time.

Do not ever give your bird over the counter medicines from pet stores, breeders or well-meaning friends. A bird's injury and/or infection needs to be diagnosed and then treated for the particular injury or infection. All antibiotics do not work on all infections, and if his leg is fractured, will not work at all. You can also ruin a bird's kidneys and liver by giving antibiotics you see in pet stores or those given you by well meaning breeders and/or friends. These people may be nice and wonderful with their birds, AND THEY ARE NOT QUALIFIED, TRAINED medical professionals like Avian Vets or Vets in general for that matter. These people spent a lot of their life in universities to learn how to take the best care of your birds and other pets.

If you love your bird, please make an appointment right away with an Avian Vet in your area. Tell them this is an emergency situation so your bird can be seen as soon as possible. This problem will not get better until you get your bird qualified help.

Also, it is important to take him to a qualified Avian vet. Dog and cat vets do not know what to do with birds and other exotics like snakes and lizards as they are very different from dogs and cats.

Let us know what vet found as we are here to help you help your bird.
