Swollen eyelid on a African Grey Parrot

by Nora

Above my CAGs left eye there is a lump. I dont know what it is, but its not an injury. After a while he closes that eye and leaves only one eye open, he opens it,though, if he hears or sees anything strange.

I was really worried, so I took him to the vet. She gave me two multivitamins drops (vit.E and vit.A), and she also said he has a cold. Im not sure about this. I dont think this is the case, but I read online that swelling of the eyelids is a common sign on illness in greys. What illness does my grey have?

Swollen Eye

A swelling above the eye is a vitamen A defeciency especially in CAG's. The swelling also causes a problem with there breathing and sound like they have a cold. This is very commen in birds that are on a seed diet and not eating a lot of veggies and fruit.

African Grey with swollen area above eye
by: The Vet

Upper respiratory disease ("colds") do cause swelling around the eyes. The swelling is caused by the presence of pus in the infraorbital sinus. I do not know if this is what your bird has. However, the swelling is normally below the eye, but can be above and below, but rarely only above.

You should have your bird examined by another vet for a second opinion if you are not comfortable with the first diagnosis.
