tail feather loss

by cas

Our maroon bellied conure lost all but one of his tail feathers within a few minutes. He was not in an unusual or stressful situation when they came out. He was not behaving abnormally. His eating and other behavior seem normal. The feathers do not appear damaged. Do you know what might have caused this and is there reason for concern?

This could be an indication of a problem, but it may be associated with being startled or trauma as someone stepped on the tail. You should have your bird examined by an avian veterinarian.

I just found that this question did not get sent to Dr. B. While we wait for his answer, my thought is that the bird saw something that scared him or something like that.

We have had two instances that our birds have "thrown" their feathers. One bird climbed down and was on the floor and almost got stepped on and lost it's tail feathers and the other one thought a stranger was going to reach for him and he lost a ton of feathers instantly.
