Tail Feathers Fanned Out From Fall

by Kim

My Blue Crown Conure had a fall yesterday and his tail feathers are all fanned out now and won't close. What should I do? Will they eventually close and be normal?

Tail Feathers Fanned From Fall

Paulie was seen by the vet and it appears when he landed hard he damaged his "Pygostle" near the tail. Like bending back one's finger. This is what caused his tail feathers to fan out and not go back into place. The good news is the vet says it will heal on it's own and may take 2 - 3 months.

Hi Tracie:

Thank you very much for the advice and I have just scheduled an appoinment for today at 4:15 so Paulie can be seen by the avian vet in Westminster.

Your bird may have a fracture or an internal injury from the fall. Please Find an Avian Vet to examine and x-ray your bird to make sure it does not need treatment or pain meds.
