tailfeather scratching

by Kunal

My lovebird, a peach-faced male, keeps on incessantly scratching his end tailfeathers repeatedly. To check what it was we took the bird out of the cage and moved the surrounding feathers to find small scabs surrounding the base of the feathers. If you could help identify what could cause the scratching, apart from the scabs, it would be helpful.

Bird with scabs
by: The Vet

There are several problems that can cause this. One of the most common in lovebirds is polyfolliculitis. This is a genetic problem. It cause intense itching and scabs. There are other possibilities, but you need to have your bird seen by an avian veterinarian to determine the exact cause. Plus the Dr can prescribe medications to help.

This could also have a diet-based cause. Your bird should be eating a pellet diet, the best is Harrison's, to prevent nutritional deficiency. Omega fatty acid deficiency is one differential. But a diet change alone is not going to cure the problem.
