talking amazon parrot stops talking for 10 years after move

by Laurie Palmer
(St. Peter, MN, USA)

Our talking amazon parrot stoped talking for 10 years after move to another location/house. what can we do to help bring his abilities back???

Our Amazon who is now 26 yrs had a lg volcabulary until we moved into a different house. I had married at that time. He was use to living with females until then, He hasn't used his words for about 10 years and now he does a lot of screaming to get what he wants. How can we get him to talk again?? I use the words he use to know but he refuses to repeat them.

First thing you need to do is take him to be thoroughly examined by an Avian Vet only to see if the cause is physical.

The other issue is does your new partner like the bird? If partner does not like the bird, then bird is feeling this and has stopped behaving normally because of it.

Sickness is a better guess, though the amount of time you spend with your bird should be the same amount you spent with him before. There IS a reason for him changing his behavior, and it is either physically caused or environmentally caused. Take him to the avian vet first to rule in or out any kind of illness. Have basic bloodwork done to see how organs are functioning. We recommend yearly exams with avian vets for all birds and especially for the older ones as problems develop with them over time.
