talking parrot

How do I make my parrot to speak? It is six months old. I trained it to whistle and talk at the same time but it whistles very well and does not speak a word. Was it a mistake that I did by training it to whistle before speaking?

Is there any particular food that I should feed my parrot with in order to improve its speaking ability? My relations and friends advised me to feed my parrot with a lot of green chillies and to give home made food without giving any any fruits. But i give it nutritious fruits in order to keep it healthy and fit. at the same time I let it eat from my own plate and every thing I eat I share it with my bird. Do you think its all right continue my habits?

Getting parrot to talk
by: Tracie

The talking issue and the nutrition issue are likely not related, but sick birds often do not talk.

You need to change your bird's diet for sure. The food you eat is likely full of chemicals, salt and not healthy for birds.

Your bird should be eating 80% healthy pellets, like Harrison's or Roudybush and only 20% healthy treats. Seasoned table food is not a good idea.

Please read our a href="http://www.parrot-and-conure-world.com/switching-birds-to-pellets.html" target="_blank"> Switching Birds To Pellets article and other training and health articles on our Parrot Training page for help with your bird.

As far as talking is concerned, some birds just don't decide to repeat words. My mother had an African Grey parrot that only spoke a few words, but loved to repeat sounds. The bird stayed in the same room with her 24/7 and she spoke to it all the time.
