Is it possible to tame a 5 yr old cockatiel that has never been handled or let out of the cage?

Thank You
by: Kim

Thank you very much! A friend of my 12 yr old daughter got him from an elderly lady with Alzheimers. Poor baby really hasn't been taken care of and he has a broken beak, which I have no clue how long he's had this injury, and shredded feathers. He had absolutely NO toys or anything in his cage so I believe he was bored and was shredding his feathers. I have Tweety now cause he was too much for a 12 yr old girl who wanted to pet him and sit him on here shoulder. I have a 7 month old baby cockatiel named Sunny who I have had since he was 3 months and the only time he is shut in his cage is "bedtime." He is very tame and learning new things daily and this is how the 12 yr old girl expected Tweety to be.

Taming an older bird
by: Tracie

Yes, it is possible. It will take some time and patience, but it can be done. :-)

Please read the articles on our Parrot Training page for help in training your bird.

You should also considering purchasing some training materials. We have some books and DVD's on training birds and caring for your bird that will be helpful.
