thrown into confusion...dana - Scarlett Macaw behavior

In October my husband asked me if we could take in his friend's scarlett macaw because the friend did not want the hassel any more. Bagawk is about 12 to 14 years old and isn't to bad, but lately has taken to ripping out my carpet. Any ideas on why or what to try would be greatly welcomed. He still has not grown the underside of his feathers back either.

Macaw ripping up carpet

The main thing you need to focus on, is not allowing the bird to be on the floor at all. Besides your not wanting your carpet damaged, your bird my ingest something that could kill it.

I don't know your home situation to make suggestions. The "large bird" owners I know have bird rooms where their birds can make messes and get around safely.

Ideally your bird has a large cage with either a play top or a separate play stand to keep it busy and happy. Most birds want to follow us where we go, so when you are going to leave the room, or not be next to the play stand, you will need to lock the bird back up in it's cage.

We do have some training materials on our Parrot Training page that will also help you understand how to replace unwanted behavior with a behavior you want.
