Time for my bird to fly?

by Gloria Garza
(San Antonio, Texas)

My quaker parrot is four months old and he doesn't fly up he stays down low. Is that OK?

Time for my bird to fly?

You want to always keep your bird's wings clipped so he just goes down and not up. Have an Avian Vet clip ONLY the 4-6 Primary Flight feathers which are the long ones on the ends of each wing.

You don't want your bird to be able to get enough lift to fly up because this is how birds fly away from their caretakers or hurt themselves on something in the house. Your bird just simply does not need to fly all over the place unless he is in a very large Aviary most likely outside, and they cost a lot of money to build correctly. If bird is a pet and kept inside, then keep his wings clipped as I outlined above.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
