Timing to introduce baby amazon parrot to his cage, bathing, toys?

You need to wait until your baby is in the weaning process before putting him in a cage environment and definately bathing except for cleanup after being handfed. He will not be ready to begin weaning process for at least another two months maybe 3, and then weaning is a process not something that happens instantly. Meaning you will continue to handfeed at least 2-3 times a day until he is eating more solid food and then cut down to 2 times and finally 1 time a day. It takes a while, so watch your bird and read his signals as to when you do the stepping down on handfeeding.

We highly recommend you begin the weaning process using organic pellets like Harrison's pellets. They also have a yummy bird bread mix and be sure and get Sunshine Factor's Organic Red Palm oil for the oil it calls for. The reason for the cold pressed organic oil is all the oil in supermarkets are either hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated and very unhealthy for birds especially babies.

So, hopefully you're feeding high quality hand feeding formula as your baby looks very healthy and happy. Once he is around 4-5 months old, you can begin the weaning process. Just be sure to wean him onto the organic pellets as main part of his diet as seeds are very unhealthy and lack quality proteins, vitamins and minerals plus contain loads of fat. Amazons tend to get fat, so keep an eye on his weight once he's weaned. Right now, feed him all he needs. Feed NO human foods.

So, right now, keep him in his brooding box though he will probably not need extra heat. Make sure box is covered at night. He can go into a smaller cage with correct sized grate on the bottom once he's a bit larger. He needs to learn how to walk on grating, and just make sure it is correct size for Amazon so he doesn't get his legs and feet broken slipping through too large a grating. You may wish to add a low perch and see if he climbs up. Put a lightweight cover on cage at night to keep him warm and leave a couple of inches at bottom for ventilation.Hopefully he'll learn to perch if the perches are low enough.

Once he is ready to wean, he can go into his larger cage Put safe wood natural branch perches in his cage and use the dowels that come with cage for practicing stepping up. The dowels hurt bird's feet and legs and cause arthritis.

Write back once he is ready to wean and don't forget the Harrisons pellets, course grind and the bird bread mix and organic red palm oil made by Sunshine Factor. The bread mix bakes up and stores in freezer for up to 6 months and in refrigerator for about 4-5 days, so slice it up, wrap each slice in saran wrap and put in freezer bags and take out what you need and allow it to thaw out and warm to room temperature before feeding. The bread is a great way for your bird to get used to the flavor of the pellets and is a fun weaning food.
