trimming budgie black nails

My budgie parakeet is still a baby, hasn't had first molt yet, and has black toenails, how do i cut them without being able to see the blood line on them? My other budgie has pink feet too but he has white nails so his are easy, I normally leave them alone but the nails on my new little budgie are so long they snag on clothing and the rug etc.

Safe way to trim birds nails
by: The Vet

I do not recommend trimming baby nails. They need their grip to hold onto their perch. You should provide a Safe Pedicure Perch for him to sleep on and this will dull the nails for you in a few days.

The risk of bleeding is too high. If you must do the nails, use an emery board or other nail file and dull them with that instead. If you want to cut them, you should be shown how to do this with a demonstration.

Editors note: We put a Sweet Feet and Beak Pedicure Perch at every food and water station and at favorite toy sites so that our birds will have to move around on them and get their nails trimmed.

Trimming black budgie nails
by: Kralie4u

I use a nail trimmer designed for humans and do not go down too far.
I have recently bought the pet nail trimmer for my dogs and have used it on my birds too. With any trimming one must be very careful!
You can always take it to the vet, they have way more experience with animal nail care.

Editors note: If you are not comfortable trying to stop the bleeding if you cut too far back, then do NOT trim the nails yourself. The bird can bleed to death if you do not stop the bleeding.
