Twitching feet

by Crystal

Hi, My budgie (girl) has just started this evening making a twitching motion with her feet. Its as if she is lifting each one up and contracting it in a ball, and alternating between feet?

Can you help please.

Thanks,
Crystal

Yes, get your bird to an Avian Vet for a checkup to rule out physical causes for this.

The other thing it could be is the wrong kind of perches. Birds cannot sit on those wooden dowels all their lives as they hurt their feet and cause arthritis and other foot and leg problems.

All birds need to be sitting on natural wood branches, and these are sold in most pet stores and online ones as well. Manzanita is good as is Apple, Walnut. If making your own perches, never use wood that has ever been sprayed with pesticide or fertilizer. Use clean wood preferably bought from a reputable store where it comes with hardware in place. Make sure they are washed in hot water with a non-toxic product that leaves no residue(bird safe). Never use bleach or ammonia around birds or on their perches or toys or floor as the fumes will kill them.

Between the Avian Vet and providing the correct perches, your bird will hopefully be fine. Also, he needs to be eating organic pellets like Harrison's as all seed diets cause fatty liver disease and other numerous health problems along the way to Liver disease.

Thanks for writing,
Linda

Dr B can not help, because he can not examine your bird. You need to get your bird to an avian vet asap. This might could be egg binding or some other internal problem causing this. Only a visit in person will answer the question as to what is wrong and allow your bird to get help.

Let us know what happens at the vet.
