Type of parrot

by Kara DeVaul
(Germany)

I was given a small parrot today that was found outside. He/she is bright yellow all over except the feathers right above the beak are bright red. His beak is a light peach color. I have looked everywhere trying to find the breed he is, but have had no luck. Can somebody please help me out? He is about as long as my hand from the tip of his tail to his head.

It is possibly a lovebird. The size you described fits them. As for the yellow. What ever the parrot species is, the yellow is most likely just a mutation (colour bred into the parrot) so if you are looking for a specific parrot species you may be looking at the original colour they come in.

There is another parrot that has the yellow & red above the beak. That's the lutino kakariki parrot but they are a little bigger than the average length of the hand.

The bird possibly belongs to someone else so you should try & find it's owners. Also not every escapee is sick. In Australia we have so many escapees being saved & placed into homes & these birds are extremely healthy. You can (& should) take the bird to an avian vet for a check up but don't expect it to be instantly sick just because it has escaped.

Hope this helps

You need to take your bird to an Avian Vet in your driving area because rescued birds are most always sick and possibly infested with worms and other parasites picked up from outside birds.

The Avian Vet will be able to tell you what species and kind your bird is.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
