umbrella cockatoo behavior change

Normally, when we see sudden changes like this in behavior it can indicate a physical problem of some kind. If you have not been taking him into Avian Vet at least once a year for a well-bird checks, then do so now. He needs to be checked for infections plus needs some basic bloodwork done to see if he has any issues with Kidneys, Liver and Thyroid. Hopefully he's eating a diet consisting mainly of organic pellets because if he is still eating all seed diet, now and as he ages is when the real problems with a poor quality diet start showing up.

There could also be an issue with something changing in his environment. For instance, you changing the way you dress or wear your hair including color. Birds are creatures of habit, so if we change ourselves too much at once, they will not recognize us. This happened once when I came out of bath wearing a towel on hair. Both Amazons freaked and looked like some serial killer had just stepped into view. Once I took off the towel, they settled down and told me hi.

So, take him to Avian Vet to rule out physical causes for this behavior and then look at any changes that have been made with yourself or the environment around the bird. New toys, bowls perches and even a cage moved from one place to another can cause stress for them as they like things always the same.

Let us know what the Avian Vet says and if you've made any changes to yourself or his surroundings when you can.
