This Umbrella Cockatoo was rescued from being put to sleep.

Umbrella Cockatoo Picture photo

Pearl is an 11 year old Umbrella Cockatoo, as of Feb. 2007. When I decided to take her 7 years ago, she was on her way to a veterinarian's office to be euthanized.

Her first owner abused/neglected her, and she was very mean to her new owners. I knew the bird from her being boarded at the veterinarian's office where I worked, and I thought she was a very nice bird.

There have been a lot of ups and downs in our relationship, like biting and jealousy of my other birds, but now she is a very lovable and fun bird to be around.

I had her in my pet store for 3 years and everyday the kids would come in after school to see Pearl. She would dance and talk for them.

We do have my mom as her co-parent so when she is in her breeding season she doesn't attack me, which she has done in the past. Also, most days she needs to be picked up and put down with a blanket covering our hands, but thats something her and I have adapted to doing.

In the summer Pearl, Shaylin my Double Yellow Headed Amazon, and Polly my Sulphur Crested Cockatoo spend many afternoons outside bathing with the hose and soaking up the suns rays.
