Unexplained Illness in Lovebird

by Jessica
(Bellevue, WA, USA)

I have a six month old lovebird. He became very puffy and almost comatose on Thursday night/Friday morning. He wouldn't eat or drink anything. I took him to his avian vet Friday afternoon and they did a blood panel and gave fluids and a vitamin B injection. Saturday we were advised his blood work was completely clear. His liver and kidneys were fine, white blood count was 5.8. He hasn't lost any weight. His fecal smear was normal and a throat swab produced no growth. We were advised to take him to the emergency vet for x-rays if he wasn't producing any droppings, but he has and it looks pretty normal, if a bit watery.

I fed him Pedialyte and Zupreem baby hand feed formula through a medication dropper every two hours throughout the day and night. He stays inside his happy hut under his heat emitter. He'll eat a very small amount of millet. He's stopped all chatter and won't make a sound.

I'm very confused and worried. Aside from x-rays and IV fluids at the emergency vet, I don't know what else I can do. Any advise out there to make him more comfortable?

Keeping him warm, in 90-95 degrees, and with food and water, is the best you can do until you get a diagnosis. You need to have the x-rays done. Heavy metal poisoning is a possible differential and will show on x-rays. Other types of toxicities should be considered too. This sounds like it came on suddenly. However, consider viruses such as PBFD and PDD (ABv), and even polyomavirus if he is not vaccinated.
