Unsure ...wild baby lorikeet help needed

Poor lil' guy ...

Poor lil' guy ...

Baby lorikeet knocked out of tree by builders. Taken home and feeding via syringe watered-down organic fruit baby food. Hardly has any feathers - very young but seems to be feeding well - a little every hour or so. Have placed in bath on towels, and made one towel into a nest. Have put little wattle tree brances in with it to give it some coverage. Is this OK?

Baby Lorikeet

First, you need to take your bird to an Avian Vet in your area to be checked for parasites and infections and/or injury. Next, you need to buy a baby parrot handfeeding formula and get him onto a nutritious diet. You can still use the syringe, and you need to make sure you follow directions on packaging of formula. Since this baby does have some feathers, feed him enough so that his crop is full and distended somewhat up to four times a day. He is not eating enough right now because he may be injured or sick. Do not overfeed and make sure the food is warmed some as cold or room temp food will not be able to be digested and baby will sicken and die.

Tracie has formula out here ( Roudybush breeder formulas), but you need to go to a pet or bird store to get some as this baby needs food right away. The fruit you are feeding him is only giving him some carbs and no real nutrition. Talk with the Avian Vet about any other questions you have about the Lorikeets or look for more information on the internet.

Right now your baby needs to see an Avian vet and have some food put into him. Please get both done as soon as is possible. In the meantime, some baby cereal (the kind you add water to and cook up will do for a very short term). You may have to feed it with a spoon. The baby parrot formula is a must at this point. It is important that you get the handfeeding formula right away and get him to the vet so he can be checked out.

Let us know how everything goes and thank you for helping this helpless baby.

Linda
