unusual parrot vomiting behavior

by steven g.
(San Diego california)

I have a Senegal parrot that I think is trying to vomit because she looks as if she is yawning repeatedly. She stretches out her neck closes her eyes and opens her beak as if she is trying to vomit. Is this normal behavior? Or is something wrong?

This is normal behavior, unless it is performed over and over or continuously. Normally it is done to clear the Eustachian tubes of the inner ear, but it could indicate an inner ear infection or other problem. I recommend that you have your bird examined immediately.

She possibly has something stuck either in her throat or her crop. DO NOT TRY AND GET IT OUT AS THIS WILL STRESS HER TO DEATH. You will need to take her to be examined immediately by an Avian Vet, and California is full of them as it's the parrot breeding capitol of the US. This could be an infection that is closing her throat, so get her to avian vet like yesterday.

This behavior is not normal and could indicate she is having problems breathing, so please do not wait to have her seen by avian vet because this sounds like it could result in her death if you don't move quickly.

Let us know what avian vet has to say and thanks for writing,
Linda
