Vertical wing feathers on Rose Breasted Cockatoo

by Nina

Hello Doctor, 6 weeks ago I trimmed my parrots wing feathers and she screamed and wiggled constantly like never before!!! She is 5 years old. Now the short feathers above the long flight feathers are coming in straight up/vertical to the wing. The problem is bilateral where the feathers and wings form 90 degree angles. Her feathers seem to bother her. She appears to be trying to lay them down/parallel to the wing. (A few months ago she came up with scissor beak...) What do you think the problem is and what should I do ???? She is on Lafeabers pellets. She also has a vita lite on her during the day. She is not a plucker. Thank you for your time and assistance. Bird with vertical wing feathers
by: The Avian Vet

I do not think that this is a nutritional problem; you are feeding a good diet and using a full spectrum light. I think this may be a handling issue since she struggled so much. These feathers may have been ready to molt or they may be being forced to molt because of damage.

I recommend that you have your bird seen by an avian veterinarian. I also recommend that you allow a professional clip your bird in the future. Handling your bird in this way will eventually cause her to become afraid of your hands.

Sometimes Dr B doesn't answer for a few days, just so you know.

Have you had the bird checked by an avian vet for disease and nutritional problems? LeFeber's pellets are not considered to be very nutritional, I am sorry to tell you. But this sounds much more serious than a nutritional deficiency. Please Find an Avian Vet to examine your bird in person soon.
