veterinarian over prescribed medication

by Sue B's Mom

How many parrot owners have experienced a veterinarian over prescribing medicine for their parrot? If so, how did you handle the situation?

I hope there are folks here who have a backbone to provide an answer.
Thank you very much.

Thank you very much, Linda. I am grateful for your time and response.
Yes, was a board certified Avian vet.
I will report back when after I meet with another vet. Though due to the holiday it might be a while.

Hopefully, you took bird to an Avian Vet ONLY. If you took her to regular dog and cat vet, then that is what they do because they know nothing about birds.

You will need to get a copy of diagnosis and meds prescribed from the vet that made diagnosis and prescribed meds. Again, if this was not avian vet, you have no recourse. If it was avian vet, then you will need to take diagnosis and prescribed meds records to another avian vet so they can diagnose the problem and see what meds are recommended. You can also just take in diagnosis and meds record and you'll still have to take bird to be weighed because meds are given by weight of bird.

As for what you can do with the vet who prescribed incorrect dosage of meds, you can contact better business bureau and if they are subscribers to it, then you can leave negative feedback. Businesses have to subscribe yearly to better business bureau or they are not there to complain about. You can also call this into the Avian Vet Board so they have a record of this mistake which can cost a bird its life.

If you still have the paperwork from your bird's diagnosis and meds, you won't need to go back to vet for the paperwork. If not, you will need to get it and just say you lost paperwork and need it for your records.

Let us know what second avian vet has to say.
