Wanting a parrot.

Hello, I'm 15 years old and I have two small dogs. I'm thinking about getting a parrot but there are so many breeds, and I'm not sure which one would fit my lifestyle. I also live in West Virginia so, it's very cold in winter and I didn't know if that would affect the bird or not. I also play sports so I'm not home right after school. Could you suggest any breeds or any tips for me? Thanks!

While caring for a bird of any kind is by no means easy, a good start-off bird is definitely the Budgie. They are smart and friendly and love people in general, and are also easy to train. However, if you have two small dogs, I might suggest a bigger bird, such as a Conure or Amazon. My budgie, Vanilla, was attacked by my pug, Lucy. Vanilla was a huge bully, and managed to hold her own until I got Lucy off of her, but not all budgies are like that. Most are sweet and easily frightened, and unless your willing to make a commitment to protecting a small bird from a larger dog, go with one of larger size.

I'm no expert but I would start with easy birds, a pair of budgies that you can enjoy but that will entertain each other while you decide if you can keep up with your new pets' needs and your school. 4-H actually has an exotic pets option, not just for cows any more-at least they did when I was much younger, that might guide you with a group of your peers.

Do your research before you get a bird. But for a first bird I would suggest a budgie or a cockatiel.
